The Lucky Ones

Woman looking grateful and hopeful holding chest | Spry Fitness and Nutrition

This 2018 AGT audition by father and son duo, Tim and Jack, earned a golden buzzer from the man himself, Simon Cowell. After watching this heartwarming performance again recently, I couldn’t help but think just how lucky—and grateful— I am during this month of giving thanks.

I am thankful for …

… being born and raised in Canada, a relatively safe, tolerant and just country far from the unspeakable tragedy unfolding in the Middle East.

… reaching this age and stage of my life without serious illness or injury. I am especially mindful of this in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My heart goes out to the 28,600 Canadian women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, and the thousands more who have, or will receive this diagnosis in 2023.

… having a roof over my head when an estimated 235,000 Canadians (likely an underestimate) are homeless. A situation even more worrisome with winter approaching.

… having the means to feed myself and my family when 60 per cent more Canadians than ever before are expected to use food banks and other, similar programs this year.

… having family and friends who love and support me when 40 per cent of Canadians report (2021) feeling lonely some or all the time. Loneliness levels have reached epidemic levels and it’s taking a toll on people’s physical and mental health according to the U.S. Surgeon General.

… having worked for most of my professional life among the 2 million (2021) highly skilled and dedicated health care professionals who take care of us despite the many challenges they face daily in doing so. My “life” in health care taught me how to navigate a complex system and I am grateful for having had the privilege. It also taught me that the best thing we can do to maintain our health is to eat well and move more, especially as we get older.

I am indeed among “The Lucky Ones,” Jack and Tim. Thank you for the reminder of just how fortunate I am to: live in a peaceful society; be healthy, physically active and well nourished; have a haven to come home to each day; have worked with many gifted healthcare professionals; be blessed with people who care about me; and now be working with people to help them improve and/or maintain their health through fitness and nutrition.
